The M21 & M22 is a four speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The M21 & M22 is a Muncie engineering design, this transmission is aluminum case, extension housing and side cover. The side cover has seven bolts and two shift cams. The synchro rings have 35 teeth and the unit has a 4 step cluster gear.

The BW 3.42 first gear was like having a 4.88 rear gear compared to the M21's 2.20 first gear. It was a real stump puller but still had good top speed and economy with the 3.08 rear gears.

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot tell a 4-speed Muncie is an M22 by looking at the input shaft splines. All M22s use a 26-spline shaft made from a stronger alloy than the other 4-speeds.
